Program description

The Out-of-Home Care Education Commitment: A Partnering Agreement (DOCX, 778KB) requires schools to allocate a Learning Mentor for all students in statutory out-of-home care (OoHC). Learning Mentors focus on supporting the student in their learning, academic achievement and wellbeing in the learning environment.

The LOOKOUT Learning Mentor training is designed to build the capability of school staff to understand the needs and experiences of students in statutory OoHC, their understanding of the Learning Mentor role, and how to undertake the role effectively.

This training is offered by LOOKOUT Centres statewide. It can be offered online or in person and takes between 2 to 5 hours depending on the mode of delivery.

Participants will gain an understanding of:

  • the experience of students in OoHC
  • common educational barriers for students in OoHC
  • LOOKOUT Centres and the Out-of-Home Care Education Commitment
  • the role of the Learning Mentor
  • building positive and safe relationships with students in OoHC
  • self-care for Learning Mentors
  • resources available to support Learning Mentors in their role.

Intended outcomes

  • Increased educator understanding and implementation of the role of a Learning Mentor
  • Increased capability to support the wellbeing of students in OoHC

Implementation considerations

Course takes approximately 2-5 hours to complete depending on delivery mode. Learning Mentors of students in out-of-home care in primary, secondary and specialist schools are permitted to attend this training.
