Program description
Minus18 delivers workshops that promote positive mental health and provide peer support to improve the lives of LGBTIQA+ students. Workshops are available to teachers, students and LGBTIQA+ young people.
Student workshops help groups appreciate diverse experiences and ideas. They discuss relationships, perspective taking, and promote empathy. They help students challenge stereotypes and prejudices. These workshops also share ways to support LGBTIQA+ peers.
Teacher workshops build the capacity of teachers to create optimal conditions for LGBTIQA+ student learning, development and wellbeing.
Youth workshops run for LGBTIQA+ students aimed at building self-awareness. They recognise student qualities and achievements and help groups to be confident, resilient and adaptable.

Implementation considerations
- Target population: Primary and secondary teachers, secondary students and LGBTIQA+ students.
- Program adaptability: The program is suitable for LGBTIQA+ students.
- Staffing: Supervising teachers are required for the student sessions and as such, backfill may be required.
- Training requirements: There are no training requirements for schools prior to implementation of the program. The program can be delivered in-person or online. Each session is approximately 60–90 minutes with a maximum of 3 hours. For in-person sessions, a suitable space, chairs and AV technology are required. For online sessions, access to participant’s own devices (phones or laptops) are required.
- Factors to consider: Schools are required to provide a suitable space, chairs and AV technology. At least 10 participants are required to take part (though ideally upwards of 20) with a maximum of 100–150. Ongoing support is available at no additional cost.
