Program description
The Orygen Trauma-Informed Care (TIC) training package equips secondary school staff with skills and knowledge to implement trauma-informed care. It aims to help schools develop an action plan to integrate trauma-informed principles and practices, creating a trauma-informed environment.
The program provides a shared understanding of the impacts of trauma on young people and supports schools in responding consistently and safely to those who have experienced trauma. The TIC package focuses on sustainable culture change, enabling schools to adopt a whole-school approach to supporting young people and staff impacted by trauma.

Implementation considerations
- Target population: All staff working within secondary schools, including teachers, school leadership, wellbeing and support staff.
- Program adaptability: TIC is designed to be adapted to the local context. School 'champions' work to develop the TIC action plan following the training.
- Staffing: School staff are required to attend a full day training. School staff identified as champions will need to be covered by others while attending a minimum of 3 one-hour sessions. However, these times can be flexible around staff availability, minimising the need for backfill.
- Training requirements: IT resources, including hardware and internet access are needed for both face-to-face training and support sessions. The training can be undertaken in 2 different formats:
- Full-day face-to-face training sessions plus 3 online champion sessions to support TIC implementation (with select group of 'champion' staff), or
- 2 x half-day training sessions, online or face-to-face plus 3 online champion sessions to support TIC implementation (with select group of 'champion' staff).
- Factors to consider: The maximum number of participants is 40, but the program can be repeated to ensure everyone identified is able to take part.
- Australian context: The program has been developed and applied in Australia.
