Program overview
In the 2021-22 Victorian Budget, the Victorian Government provided further funding of over $3.5 million over 4 years plus $1.062 million ongoing to support the Music in Schools (MiS) program.
MiS aims to:
- increase opportunities for Victorian children and young people to participate in quality music education, especially in primary and specialist schools
- improve capability and confidence of teachers to teach music and implement the Victorian Curriculum F-6: Arts Music, including assessment and reporting
- increase access to music programs for students in disadvantaged schools and communities across Victoria.
MiS currently supports 40 Victorian government schools each year at no cost, with program delivery undertaken by our partners the Song Room. Participating schools are provided:
- access to a high-quality professional learning program for primary school teachers (generalists and nominated specialists), without qualifications in music or music education, so they can teach music with greater confidence and capability
- a grant to purchase or hire music instruments and other resources so they can establish or strengthen the delivery of classroom music programs for their students.
The Music in Schools program has so far provided professional learning for over 2,000 teachers from 1,140 Victorian schools, 1330 pre-service Victorian teachers and has enabled over 440 schools to purchase resources for classroom music programs.
